إِذَا ٱلشَّمۡسُ كُوِّرَتۡ
When the sun is wrapped up [in darkness]
إِذَاWhen
ٱلشَّمۡسُthe sun
كُوِّرَتۡis wrapped up,
Tafsir Ibn Kathir

What has been narrated about This Surah

Imam Ahmad recorded from Ibn `Umar that the Messenger of Allah said,

« مَنْ سَرَّهُ أَنْ يَنْظُرَ إِلى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ كَأَنَّهُ رَأْيُ عَيْنٍ فَلْيَقْرَأْ:
﴿ إِذَا ٱلشَّمۡسُ كُوِّرَتۡ
وَ
﴿ إِذَا ٱلسَّمَآءُ ٱنفَطَرَتۡ
وَ
﴿ إِذَا ٱلسَّمَآءُ ٱنشَقَّتۡ

(Whoever wishes to look at the Day of Judgement as if he is seeing it with his own eyes, then let him read, (When the sun is wound round.) (81:1) (and; (When the heaven is cleft asunder.) (82:1) (and; (When the heaven is split asunder.) (84:1)) Likewise, At-Tirmidhi has also recorded this Hadith.

﴿ بِسۡمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

﴿ إِذَا ٱلشَّمۡسُ كُوِّرَتۡ وَإِذَا ٱلنُّجُومُ ٱنكَدَرَتۡ وَإِذَا ٱلۡجِبَالُ سُيِّرَتۡ وَإِذَا ٱلۡعِشَارُ عُطِّلَتۡ وَإِذَا ٱلۡوُحُوشُ حُشِرَتۡ وَإِذَا ٱلۡبِحَارُ سُجِّرَتۡ وَإِذَا ٱلنُّفُوسُ زُوِّجَتۡ وَإِذَا ٱلۡمَوۡءُ ۥدَةُ سُٮِٕلَتۡ بِأَىِّ ذَنۢبٍ۬ قُتِلَتۡ وَإِذَا ٱلصُّحُفُ نُشِرَتۡ وَإِذَا ٱلسَّمَآءُ كُشِطَتۡ وَإِذَا ٱلۡجَحِيمُ سُعِّرَتۡ وَإِذَا ٱلۡجَنَّةُ أُزۡلِفَتۡ عَلِمَتۡ نَفۡسٌ۬ مَّآ أَحۡضَرَتۡ

(1.When the sun is Kuwwirat.) (2. And when the stars Inkadarat.) (3. And when the mountains are made to pass away;) (4. And when the pregnant she-camels are neglected;) (5. And when the wild beasts are gathered together.) (6. And when the seas become as blazing fire.) (7. And when the souls are joined with their mates.) (8. And when the female infant (Al-Maw'udah) buried alive is questioned (Su'ilat):) (9. For what sin was she killed) (10. And when the pages are laid open.) (11. And when the heaven is Kushitat;) (12. And when Hell is Su`irat.) (13. And when Paradise is brought near.) (14. Every person will know what he has brought.)

وَإِذَا ٱلنُّجُومُ ٱنكَدَرَتۡ
And when the stars fall, dispersing,
وَإِذَاAnd when
ٱلنُّجُومُthe stars
ٱنكَدَرَتۡfall, losing their luster

What has been narrated about This Surah

Imam Ahmad recorded from Ibn `Umar that the Messenger of Allah said,

« مَنْ سَرَّهُ أَنْ يَنْظُرَ إِلى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ كَأَنَّهُ رَأْيُ عَيْنٍ فَلْيَقْرَأْ:
﴿ إِذَا ٱلشَّمۡسُ كُوِّرَتۡ
وَ
﴿ إِذَا ٱلسَّمَآءُ ٱنفَطَرَتۡ
وَ
﴿ إِذَا ٱلسَّمَآءُ ٱنشَقَّتۡ

(Whoever wishes to look at the Day of Judgement as if he is seeing it with his own eyes, then let him read, (When the sun is wound round.) (81:1) (and; (When the heaven is cleft asunder.) (82:1) (and; (When the heaven is split asunder.) (84:1)) Likewise, At-Tirmidhi has also recorded this Hadith.

And when the mountains are removed
وَإِذَاAnd when
ٱلۡجِبَالُthe mountains
سُيِّرَتۡare moved away,

What has been narrated about This Surah

Imam Ahmad recorded from Ibn `Umar that the Messenger of Allah said,

« مَنْ سَرَّهُ أَنْ يَنْظُرَ إِلى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ كَأَنَّهُ رَأْيُ عَيْنٍ فَلْيَقْرَأْ:

وَإِذَا ٱلۡعِشَارُ عُطِّلَتۡ
And when full-term she-camels are neglected
وَإِذَاAnd when
ٱلۡعِشَارُthe full-term she-camels
عُطِّلَتۡ(are) left untended;

What has been narrated about This Surah

Imam Ahmad recorded from Ibn `Umar that the Messenger of Allah said,

« مَنْ سَرَّهُ أَنْ يَنْظُرَ إِلى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ كَأَنَّهُ رَأْيُ عَيْنٍ فَلْيَقْرَأْ:

وَإِذَا ٱلۡبِحَارُ سُجِّرَتۡ
And when the seas are filled with flame
وَإِذَاAnd when
ٱلۡبِحَارُthe seas
سُجِّرَتۡare made to overflow,

Imam Ahmad recorded from Ibn `Umar that the Messenger of Allah said,

« مَنْ سَرَّهُ أَنْ يَنْظُرَ إِلى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ كَأَنَّهُ رَأْيُ عَيْنٍ فَلْيَقْرَأْ:

وَإِذَا ٱلنُّفُوسُ زُوِّجَتۡ
And when the souls are paired
وَإِذَاAnd when
ٱلنُّفُوسُthe souls
زُوِّجَتۡare paired,

Imam Ahmad recorded from Ibn `Umar that the Messenger of Allah said,

And when the girl [who was] buried alive is asked
وَإِذَاAnd when
ٱلۡمَوۡءُ ۥدَةُthe female infant buried alive
سُٮِٕلَتۡis asked

Imam Ahmad recorded from Ibn `Umar that the Messenger of Allah said,

« مَنْ سَرَّهُ أَنْ يَنْظُرَ إِلى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ كَأَنَّهُ رَأْيُ عَيْنٍ فَلْيَقْرَأْ:
﴿ إِذَا ٱلشَّمۡسُ كُوِّرَتۡ
وَ
﴿ إِذَا ٱلسَّمَآءُ ٱنفَطَرَتۡ

عَلِمَتۡ نَفۡسٌ۬ مَّآ أَحۡضَرَتۡ
A soul will [then] know what it has brought [with it].
عَلِمَتۡWill know

فَلَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِٱلۡخُنَّسِ
So I swear by the retreating stars –
فَلَآBut nay!
أُقۡسِمُI swear
بِٱلۡخُنَّسِby the retreating planets,

Everyone will know what He has brought on the Day of Judgement Concerning

Allah's statement,

﴿ عَلِمَتۡ نَفۡسٌ۬ مَّآ أَحۡضَرَتۡ

(Every person will know what he has brought.) This is the conclusive response of the previous statements, meaning at the time these matters occur, every soul will know what it has done, and that will be brought forth for it, as Allah says,

﴿ يَوۡمَ تَجِدُ ڪُلُّ نَفۡسٍ۬ مَّا عَمِلَتۡ مِنۡ خَيۡرٍ۬ مُّحۡضَرً۬ا وَمَا عَمِلَتۡ مِن سُوٓءٍ۬ تَوَدُّ لَوۡ أَنَّ بَيۡنَهَا وَبَيۡنَهُ ۥۤ أَمَدَۢا بَعِيدً۬ا‌ۗ

(On the Day when every person will be confronted with all the good he has done, and all the evil he has done, he will wish that there were a great distance between him and his evil.) (3:30) Allah also says,

﴿ يُنَبَّؤُاْ ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنُ يَوۡمَٮِٕذِۭ بِمَا قَدَّمَ وَأَخَّرَ

(On that Day man will be informed of what he sent forward, and what he left behind.) (75:13)

﴿ فَلَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِٱلۡخُنَّسِ ٱلۡجَوَارِ ٱلۡكُنَّسِ وَٱلَّيۡلِ إِذَا عَسۡعَسَ وَٱلصُّبۡحِ إِذَا تَنَفَّسَ إِنَّهُ ۥ لَقَوۡلُ رَسُولٍ۬ كَرِيمٍ۬ ذِى قُوَّةٍ عِندَ ذِى ٱلۡعَرۡشِ مَكِينٍ۬ مُّطَاعٍ۬ ثَمَّ أَمِينٍ۬ وَمَا صَاحِبُكُم بِمَجۡنُونٍ۬ وَلَقَدۡ رَءَاهُ بِٱلۡأُفُقِ ٱلۡمُبِينِ وَمَا هُوَ عَلَى ٱلۡغَيۡبِ بِضَنِينٍ۬ وَمَا هُوَ بِقَوۡلِ شَيۡطَـٰنٍ۬ رَّجِيمٍ۬ فَأَيۡنَ تَذۡهَبُونَ إِنۡ هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكۡرٌ۬ لِّلۡعَـٰلَمِينَ لِمَن شَآءَ مِنكُمۡ أَن يَسۡتَقِيمَ وَمَا تَشَآءُونَ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِينَ

(15. But nay! I swear by Al-Khunnas.) (16. Al-Jawar Al-Kunnas.) (17. And by the night when it `As`as.) (18. And by the day when it Tanaffas.) (19. Verily, this is the Word a most honorable messenger.) (20. Dhi Quwwah, with the Lord of the Throne -- Makin,) (21. Obeyed there, trustworthy.) (22. And your companion is not a madman.) (23. And indeed he saw him in the clear horizon.) (24. And he withholds not a knowledge of the Unseen.) (25. And it is not the word of the outcast Shaytan.) (26. Then where are you going) (27. Verily, this is no less than a Reminder for the creatures.) (28. To whomsoever among you who wills to walk straight.) (29. And you cannot will unless that Allah wills -- the Lord of all that exists.)

ٱلۡجَوَارِ ٱلۡكُنَّسِ
Those that run [their courses] and disappear –
ٱلۡجَوَارِThose that run
ٱلۡكُنَّسِ(and) disappear,

﴿ فَلَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِٱلۡخُنَّسِ ٱلۡجَوَارِ ٱلۡكُنَّسِ وَٱلَّيۡلِ إِذَا عَسۡعَسَ وَٱلصُّبۡحِ إِذَا تَنَفَّسَ إِنَّهُ ۥ لَقَوۡلُ رَسُولٍ۬ كَرِيمٍ۬ ذِى قُوَّةٍ عِندَ ذِى ٱلۡعَرۡشِ مَكِينٍ۬ مُّطَاعٍ۬ ثَمَّ أَمِينٍ۬ وَمَا صَاحِبُكُم بِمَجۡنُونٍ۬ وَلَقَدۡ رَءَاهُ بِٱلۡأُفُقِ ٱلۡمُبِينِ وَمَا هُوَ عَلَى ٱلۡغَيۡبِ بِضَنِينٍ۬ وَمَا هُوَ بِقَوۡلِ شَيۡطَـٰنٍ۬ رَّجِيمٍ۬ فَأَيۡنَ تَذۡهَبُونَ إِنۡ هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكۡرٌ۬ لِّلۡعَـٰلَمِينَ لِمَن شَآءَ مِنكُمۡ أَن يَسۡتَقِيمَ وَمَا تَشَآءُونَ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِينَ

(15. But nay! I swear by Al-Khunnas.) (16. Al-Jawar Al-Kunnas.) (17. And by the night when it `As`as.) (18. And by the day when it Tanaffas.) (19. Verily, this is the Word a most honorable messenger.) (20. Dhi Quwwah, with the Lord of the Throne -- Makin,) (21. Obeyed there, trustworthy.) (22. And your companion is not a madman.) (23. And indeed he saw him in the clear horizon.) (24. And he withholds not a knowledge of the Unseen.) (25. And it is not the word of the outcast Shaytan.) (26. Then where are you going) (27. Verily, this is no less than a Reminder for the creatures.) (28. To whomsoever among you who wills to walk straight.) (29. And you cannot will unless that Allah wills -- the Lord of all that exists.)

وَٱلَّيۡلِ إِذَا عَسۡعَسَ
And by the night as it closes in
وَٱلَّيۡلِAnd the night

Everyone will know what He has brought on the Day of Judgement Concerning

Allah's statement,

﴿ عَلِمَتۡ نَفۡسٌ۬ مَّآ أَحۡضَرَتۡ

(Every person will know what he has brought.) This is the conclusive response of the previous statements, meaning at the time these matters occur, every soul will know what it has done, and that will be brought forth for it, as Allah says,

﴿ يَوۡمَ تَجِدُ ڪُلُّ نَفۡسٍ۬ مَّا عَمِلَتۡ مِنۡ خَيۡرٍ۬ مُّحۡضَرً۬ا وَمَا عَمِلَتۡ مِن سُوٓءٍ۬ تَوَدُّ لَوۡ أَنَّ بَيۡنَهَا وَبَيۡنَهُ ۥۤ أَمَدَۢا بَعِيدً۬ا‌ۗ

(On the Day when every person will be confronted with all the good he has done, and all the evil he has done, he will wish that there were a great distance between him and his evil.) (3:30) Allah also says,

﴿ يُنَبَّؤُاْ ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنُ يَوۡمَٮِٕذِۭ بِمَا قَدَّمَ وَأَخَّرَ

(On that Day man will be informed of what he sent forward, and what he left behind.) (75:13)

And by the dawn when it breathes
وَٱلصُّبۡحِAnd the dawn

Allah's statement,

إِنَّهُ ۥ لَقَوۡلُ رَسُولٍ۬ كَرِيمٍ۬
[That] indeed, the Qur’an is a word [conveyed by] a noble messenger
إِنَّهُ ۥIndeed, it
لَقَوۡلُ(is) surely a word
رَسُولٍ۬(of) a Messenger
كَرِيمٍ۬noble,

ذِى قُوَّةٍ عِندَ ذِى ٱلۡعَرۡشِ مَكِينٍ۬
[Who is] possessed of power and with the Owner of the Throne, secure [in position],
ذِى قُوَّةٍPossessor of power,
عِندَwith
ذِى ٱلۡعَرۡشِ(the) Owner of the Throne
مَكِينٍ۬secure,

مُّطَاعٍ۬ ثَمَّ أَمِينٍ۬
Obeyed there [in the heavens] and trustworthy.
مُّطَاعٍ۬One to be obeyed

أَمِينٍ۬trustworthy,

وَمَا صَاحِبُكُم بِمَجۡنُونٍ۬
And your companion is not [at all] mad.
وَمَاAnd not
صَاحِبُكُم(is) your companion
بِمَجۡنُونٍ۬mad.

وَلَقَدۡ رَءَاهُ بِٱلۡأُفُقِ ٱلۡمُبِينِ
And he has already seen Gabriel in the clear horizon.
وَلَقَدۡAnd certainly
رَءَاهُhe saw him
بِٱلۡأُفُقِin the horizon
ٱلۡمُبِينِthe clear.

Allah's statement,

(Every person will know what he has brought.) This is the conclusive response of the previous statements, meaning at the time these matters occur, every soul will know what it has done, and that will be brought forth for it, as Allah says,

﴿ يَوۡمَ تَجِدُ ڪُلُّ نَفۡسٍ۬ مَّا عَمِلَتۡ مِنۡ خَيۡرٍ۬ مُّحۡضَرً۬ا وَمَا عَمِلَتۡ مِن سُوٓءٍ۬ تَوَدُّ لَوۡ أَنَّ بَيۡنَهَا وَبَيۡنَهُ ۥۤ أَمَدَۢا بَعِيدً۬ا‌ۗ

(On the Day when every person will be confronted with all the good he has done, and all the evil he has done, he will wish that there were a great distance between him and his evil.) (3:30) Allah also says,

﴿ يُنَبَّؤُاْ ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنُ يَوۡمَٮِٕذِۭ بِمَا قَدَّمَ وَأَخَّرَ

(On that Day man will be informed of what he sent forward, and what he left behind.) (75:13)

﴿ فَلَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِٱلۡخُنَّسِ ٱلۡجَوَارِ ٱلۡكُنَّسِ وَٱلَّيۡلِ إِذَا عَسۡعَسَ وَٱلصُّبۡحِ إِذَا تَنَفَّسَ إِنَّهُ ۥ لَقَوۡلُ رَسُولٍ۬ كَرِيمٍ۬ ذِى قُوَّةٍ عِندَ ذِى ٱلۡعَرۡشِ مَكِينٍ۬ مُّطَاعٍ۬ ثَمَّ أَمِينٍ۬ وَمَا صَاحِبُكُم بِمَجۡنُونٍ۬ وَلَقَدۡ رَءَاهُ بِٱلۡأُفُقِ ٱلۡمُبِينِ وَمَا هُوَ عَلَى ٱلۡغَيۡبِ بِضَنِينٍ۬ وَمَا هُوَ بِقَوۡلِ شَيۡطَـٰنٍ۬ رَّجِيمٍ۬ فَأَيۡنَ تَذۡهَبُونَ إِنۡ هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكۡرٌ۬ لِّلۡعَـٰلَمِينَ لِمَن شَآءَ مِنكُمۡ أَن يَسۡتَقِيمَ وَمَا تَشَآءُونَ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِينَ

(15. But nay! I swear by Al-Khunnas.) (16. Al-Jawar Al-Kunnas.) (17. And by the night when it `As`as.) (18. And by the day when it Tanaffas.) (19. Verily, this is the Word a most honorable messenger.) (20. Dhi Quwwah, with the Lord of the Throne -- Makin,) (21. Obeyed there, trustworthy.) (22. And your companion is not a madman.) (23. And indeed he saw him in the clear horizon.) (24. And he withholds not a knowledge of the Unseen.) (25. And it is not the word of the outcast Shaytan.) (26. Then where are you going) (27. Verily, this is no less than a Reminder for the creatures.) (28. To whomsoever among you who wills to walk straight.) (29. And you cannot will unless that Allah wills -- the Lord of all that exists.)

وَمَا هُوَ عَلَى ٱلۡغَيۡبِ بِضَنِينٍ۬
And Muhammad is not a withholder of [knowledge of] the unseen.
وَمَاAnd not

ٱلۡغَيۡبِthe unseen
بِضَنِينٍ۬a withholder.

وَمَا هُوَ بِقَوۡلِ شَيۡطَـٰنٍ۬ رَّجِيمٍ۬
And the Qur’an is not the word of a devil, expelled [from the heavens].
وَمَاAnd not
هُوَit
بِقَوۡلِ(is the) word
شَيۡطَـٰنٍ۬(of) Shaitaan
رَّجِيمٍ۬accursed.

So where are you going?
فَأَيۡنَSo where

إِنۡ هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكۡرٌ۬ لِّلۡعَـٰلَمِينَ
It is not except a reminder to the worlds

لِمَن شَآءَ مِنكُمۡ أَن يَسۡتَقِيمَ
For whoever wills among you to take a right course.
لِمَنFor whoever

وَمَا تَشَآءُونَ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِينَ
And you do not will except that Allah wills – Lord of the worlds.
وَمَاAnd not

أَنthat
يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُAllah wills,
رَبُّLord
ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِينَ(of) the worlds.
