لَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِہَـٰذَا ٱلۡبَلَدِ
I swear by this city, Makkah –
لَآNay!
أُقۡسِمُI swear
بِہَـٰذَاby this
ٱلۡبَلَدِcity,
Tafsir Ibn Kathir

Which was revealed in Makkah

﴿ بِسۡمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

﴿ لَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِہَـٰذَا ٱلۡبَلَدِ وَأَنتَ حِلُّۢ بِہَـٰذَا ٱلۡبَلَدِ وَوَالِدٍ۬ وَمَا وَلَدَ لَقَدۡ خَلَقۡنَا ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَ فِى كَبَدٍ أَيَحۡسَبُ أَن لَّن يَقۡدِرَ عَلَيۡهِ أَحَدٌ۬ يَقُولُ أَهۡلَكۡتُ مَالاً۬ لُّبَدًا أَيَحۡسَبُ أَن لَّمۡ يَرَهُ ۥۤ أَحَدٌ أَلَمۡ نَجۡعَل لَّهُ ۥ عَيۡنَيۡنِ وَلِسَانً۬ا وَشَفَتَيۡنِ وَهَدَيۡنَـٰهُ ٱلنَّجۡدَيۡنِ

(1. Nay! I swear by this city;) (2. And you are free in this city.) (3. And by the begetter and that which he begot.) (4. Verily, We have created man in Kabad.) (5. Does he think that none can overcome him) (6. He says: "I have wasted wealth in abundance!'') (7. Does he think that none sees him) (8. Have We not made for him two eyes) (9. And a tongue and two lips) (10. And shown him the two ways)

وَأَنتَ حِلُّۢ بِہَـٰذَا ٱلۡبَلَدِ
And you, [O Muhammad], are free of restriction in this city –
وَأَنتَAnd you
حِلُّۢ(are) free (to dwell)
بِہَـٰذَاin this
ٱلۡبَلَدِcity.

﴿ بِسۡمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

﴿ لَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِہَـٰذَا ٱلۡبَلَدِ وَأَنتَ حِلُّۢ بِہَـٰذَا ٱلۡبَلَدِ وَوَالِدٍ۬ وَمَا وَلَدَ لَقَدۡ خَلَقۡنَا ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَ فِى كَبَدٍ أَيَحۡسَبُ أَن لَّن يَقۡدِرَ عَلَيۡهِ أَحَدٌ۬ يَقُولُ أَهۡلَكۡتُ مَالاً۬ لُّبَدًا أَيَحۡسَبُ أَن لَّمۡ يَرَهُ ۥۤ أَحَدٌ أَلَمۡ نَجۡعَل لَّهُ ۥ عَيۡنَيۡنِ وَلِسَانً۬ا وَشَفَتَيۡنِ وَهَدَيۡنَـٰهُ ٱلنَّجۡدَيۡنِ

(1. Nay! I swear by this city;) (2. And you are free in this city.) (3. And by the begetter and that which he begot.) (4. Verily, We have created man in Kabad.) (5. Does he think that none can overcome him) (6. He says: "I have wasted wealth in abundance!'') (7. Does he think that none sees him) (8. Have We not made for him two eyes) (9. And a tongue and two lips) (10. And shown him the two ways)

وَوَالِدٍ۬ وَمَا وَلَدَ
And [by] the father and that which was born [of him],
وَوَالِدٍ۬And the begetter
وَمَاand what
وَلَدَhe begot.

﴿ بِسۡمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

﴿ لَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِہَـٰذَا ٱلۡبَلَدِ وَأَنتَ حِلُّۢ بِہَـٰذَا ٱلۡبَلَدِ وَوَالِدٍ۬ وَمَا وَلَدَ لَقَدۡ خَلَقۡنَا ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَ فِى كَبَدٍ أَيَحۡسَبُ أَن لَّن يَقۡدِرَ عَلَيۡهِ أَحَدٌ۬ يَقُولُ أَهۡلَكۡتُ مَالاً۬ لُّبَدًا أَيَحۡسَبُ أَن لَّمۡ يَرَهُ ۥۤ أَحَدٌ أَلَمۡ نَجۡعَل لَّهُ ۥ عَيۡنَيۡنِ وَلِسَانً۬ا وَشَفَتَيۡنِ وَهَدَيۡنَـٰهُ ٱلنَّجۡدَيۡنِ

(1. Nay! I swear by this city;) (2. And you are free in this city.) (3. And by the begetter and that which he begot.) (4. Verily, We have created man in Kabad.) (5. Does he think that none can overcome him) (6. He says: "I have wasted wealth in abundance!'') (7. Does he think that none sees him) (8. Have We not made for him two eyes) (9. And a tongue and two lips) (10. And shown him the two ways)

لَقَدۡ خَلَقۡنَا ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَ فِى كَبَدٍ
We have certainly created man into hardship.
لَقَدۡCertainly,
خَلَقۡنَاWe have created
ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَman
فِى(to be) in
كَبَدٍhardship.

﴿ بِسۡمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

(1. Nay! I swear by this city;) (2. And you are free in this city.) (3. And by the begetter and that which he begot.) (4. Verily, We have created man in Kabad.) (5. Does he think that none can overcome him) (6. He says: "I have wasted wealth in abundance!'') (7. Does he think that none sees him) (8. Have We not made for him two eyes) (9. And a tongue and two lips) (10. And shown him the two ways)

أَيَحۡسَبُ أَن لَّن يَقۡدِرَ عَلَيۡهِ أَحَدٌ۬
Does he think that never will anyone overcome him?
أَيَحۡسَبُDoes he think
أَنthat
لَّنnot
يَقۡدِرَhas power
عَلَيۡهِover him
أَحَدٌ۬anyone?

(1. Nay! I swear by this city;) (2. And you are free in this city.) (3. And by the begetter and that which he begot.) (4. Verily, We have created man in Kabad.) (5. Does he think that none can overcome him) (6. He says: "I have wasted wealth in abundance!'') (7. Does he think that none sees him) (8. Have We not made for him two eyes) (9. And a tongue and two lips) (10. And shown him the two ways)

يَقُولُ أَهۡلَكۡتُ مَالاً۬ لُّبَدًا
He says, "I have spent wealth in abundance."
يَقُولُHe will say,
أَهۡلَكۡتُ`I have squandered
مَالاً۬wealth
لُّبَدًاabundant.`

﴿ بِسۡمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

أَيَحۡسَبُ أَن لَّمۡ يَرَهُ ۥۤ أَحَدٌ
Does he think that no one has seen him?
أَيَحۡسَبُDoes he think
أَنthat
لَّمۡnot
يَرَهُ ۥۤsees him
أَحَدٌanyone?

﴿ بِسۡمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

﴿ لَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِہَـٰذَا ٱلۡبَلَدِ وَأَنتَ حِلُّۢ بِہَـٰذَا ٱلۡبَلَدِ وَوَالِدٍ۬ وَمَا وَلَدَ لَقَدۡ خَلَقۡنَا ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَ فِى كَبَدٍ أَيَحۡسَبُ أَن لَّن يَقۡدِرَ عَلَيۡهِ أَحَدٌ۬ يَقُولُ أَهۡلَكۡتُ مَالاً۬ لُّبَدًا أَيَحۡسَبُ أَن لَّمۡ يَرَهُ ۥۤ أَحَدٌ أَلَمۡ نَجۡعَل لَّهُ ۥ عَيۡنَيۡنِ وَلِسَانً۬ا وَشَفَتَيۡنِ وَهَدَيۡنَـٰهُ ٱلنَّجۡدَيۡنِ

أَلَمۡ نَجۡعَل لَّهُ ۥ عَيۡنَيۡنِ
Have We not made for him two eyes?
أَلَمۡHave not
نَجۡعَلWe made
لَّهُ ۥfor him
عَيۡنَيۡنِtwo eyes?

وَلِسَانً۬ا وَشَفَتَيۡنِ
And a tongue and two lips?
وَلِسَانً۬اAnd a tongue,
وَشَفَتَيۡنِand two lips?

﴿ بِسۡمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

وَهَدَيۡنَـٰهُ ٱلنَّجۡدَيۡنِ
And have shown him the two ways?
وَهَدَيۡنَـٰهُAnd shown him
ٱلنَّجۡدَيۡنِthe two ways?

﴿ بِسۡمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

﴿ لَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِہَـٰذَا ٱلۡبَلَدِ وَأَنتَ حِلُّۢ بِہَـٰذَا ٱلۡبَلَدِ وَوَالِدٍ۬ وَمَا وَلَدَ لَقَدۡ خَلَقۡنَا ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَ فِى كَبَدٍ أَيَحۡسَبُ أَن لَّن يَقۡدِرَ عَلَيۡهِ أَحَدٌ۬ يَقُولُ أَهۡلَكۡتُ مَالاً۬ لُّبَدًا أَيَحۡسَبُ أَن لَّمۡ يَرَهُ ۥۤ أَحَدٌ أَلَمۡ نَجۡعَل لَّهُ ۥ عَيۡنَيۡنِ وَلِسَانً۬ا وَشَفَتَيۡنِ وَهَدَيۡنَـٰهُ ٱلنَّجۡدَيۡنِ

(1. Nay! I swear by this city;) (2. And you are free in this city.) (3. And by the begetter and that which he begot.) (4. Verily, We have created man in Kabad.) (5. Does he think that none can overcome him) (6. He says: "I have wasted wealth in abundance!'') (7. Does he think that none sees him) (8. Have We not made for him two eyes) (9. And a tongue and two lips) (10. And shown him the two ways)

11
فَلَا ٱقۡتَحَمَ ٱلۡعَقَبَةَ
But he has not broken through the difficult pass.
فَلَاBut not
ٱقۡتَحَمَhe has attempted
ٱلۡعَقَبَةَthe steep path.
Tafsir Ibn Kathir

The Ability to distinguish between Good and Evil is also a Blessing

﴿ وَهَدَيۡنَـٰهُ ٱلنَّجۡدَيۡنِ

(And shown him the two ways) This refers to the two paths. Sufyan Ath-Thawri narrated from `Asim, from Zirr, from `Abdullah bin Mas`ud that he said,

﴿ وَهَدَيۡنَـٰهُ ٱلنَّجۡدَيۡنِ

(And shown him the two ways) "The good and the evil.'' Similar to this has been reported from `Ali, Ibn `Abbas, Mujahid, `Ikrimah, Abu Wa'il, Abu Salih, Muhammad bin Ka`b, Ad-Dahhak, and `Ata' Al-Khurasani among others. Similar to this Ayah is Allah's statement,

﴿ إِنَّا خَلَقۡنَا ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَ مِن نُّطۡفَةٍ أَمۡشَاجٍ۬ نَّبۡتَلِيهِ فَجَعَلۡنَـٰهُ سَمِيعَۢا بَصِيرًا إِنَّا هَدَيۡنَـٰهُ ٱلسَّبِيلَ إِمَّا شَاكِرً۬ا وَإِمَّا كَفُورًا

(Verily, We have created man from Nutfah Amshaj, in order to try him: so We made him hearer and seer. Verily, We showed him the way, whether he be grateful or ungrateful.) (76:2-3)

﴿ فَلَا ٱقۡتَحَمَ ٱلۡعَقَبَةَ وَمَآ أَدۡرَٮٰكَ مَا ٱلۡعَقَبَةُ فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ أَوۡ إِطۡعَـٰمٌ۬ فِى يَوۡمٍ۬ ذِى مَسۡغَبَةٍ۬ يَتِيمً۬ا ذَا مَقۡرَبَةٍ أَوۡ مِسۡكِينً۬ا ذَا مَتۡرَبَةٍ۬ ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَتَوَاصَوۡاْ بِٱلصَّبۡرِ وَتَوَاصَوۡاْ بِٱلۡمَرۡحَمَةِ أُوْلَـٰٓٮِٕكَ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡمَيۡمَنَةِ وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا هُمۡ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡمَشۡـَٔمَةِ عَلَيۡہِمۡ نَارٌ۬ مُّؤۡصَدَةُۢ

(11. But he has not attempted to pass on the path that is steep.) (12. And what will make you know the path that is steep) (13. Freeing a neck) (14. Or giving food in a day full of Masghabah,) (15. To an orphan near of kin.) (16. Or to a Miskin cleaving to dust.) (17. Then he became one of those who believed and recommended one another to patience, and recommended one another to compassion.) (18. They are those on the Right,) (19. But those who disbelieved in Our Ayat, they are those on the Left.) (20. Upon them Fire will Mu'sadah.)

وَمَآ أَدۡرَٮٰكَ مَا ٱلۡعَقَبَةُ
And what can make you know what is [breaking through] the difficult pass?
وَمَآAnd what
أَدۡرَٮٰكَcan make you know
مَاwhat
ٱلۡعَقَبَةُthe steep path is?

﴿ فَلَا ٱقۡتَحَمَ ٱلۡعَقَبَةَ وَمَآ أَدۡرَٮٰكَ مَا ٱلۡعَقَبَةُ فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ أَوۡ إِطۡعَـٰمٌ۬ فِى يَوۡمٍ۬ ذِى مَسۡغَبَةٍ۬ يَتِيمً۬ا ذَا مَقۡرَبَةٍ أَوۡ مِسۡكِينً۬ا ذَا مَتۡرَبَةٍ۬ ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَتَوَاصَوۡاْ بِٱلصَّبۡرِ وَتَوَاصَوۡاْ بِٱلۡمَرۡحَمَةِ أُوْلَـٰٓٮِٕكَ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡمَيۡمَنَةِ وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا هُمۡ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡمَشۡـَٔمَةِ عَلَيۡہِمۡ نَارٌ۬ مُّؤۡصَدَةُۢ

فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ
It is the freeing of a slave
فَكُّ(It is) freeing
رَقَبَةٍa neck,

The Ability to distinguish between Good and Evil is also a Blessing

﴿ وَهَدَيۡنَـٰهُ ٱلنَّجۡدَيۡنِ

(And shown him the two ways) This refers to the two paths. Sufyan Ath-Thawri narrated from `Asim, from Zirr, from `Abdullah bin Mas`ud that he said,

﴿ وَهَدَيۡنَـٰهُ ٱلنَّجۡدَيۡنِ

(And shown him the two ways) "The good and the evil.'' Similar to this has been reported from `Ali, Ibn `Abbas, Mujahid, `Ikrimah, Abu Wa'il, Abu Salih, Muhammad bin Ka`b, Ad-Dahhak, and `Ata' Al-Khurasani among others. Similar to this Ayah is Allah's statement,

﴿ إِنَّا خَلَقۡنَا ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَ مِن نُّطۡفَةٍ أَمۡشَاجٍ۬ نَّبۡتَلِيهِ فَجَعَلۡنَـٰهُ سَمِيعَۢا بَصِيرًا إِنَّا هَدَيۡنَـٰهُ ٱلسَّبِيلَ إِمَّا شَاكِرً۬ا وَإِمَّا كَفُورًا

(Verily, We have created man from Nutfah Amshaj, in order to try him: so We made him hearer and seer. Verily, We showed him the way, whether he be grateful or ungrateful.) (76:2-3)

﴿ فَلَا ٱقۡتَحَمَ ٱلۡعَقَبَةَ وَمَآ أَدۡرَٮٰكَ مَا ٱلۡعَقَبَةُ فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ أَوۡ إِطۡعَـٰمٌ۬ فِى يَوۡمٍ۬ ذِى مَسۡغَبَةٍ۬ يَتِيمً۬ا ذَا مَقۡرَبَةٍ أَوۡ مِسۡكِينً۬ا ذَا مَتۡرَبَةٍ۬ ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَتَوَاصَوۡاْ بِٱلصَّبۡرِ وَتَوَاصَوۡاْ بِٱلۡمَرۡحَمَةِ أُوْلَـٰٓٮِٕكَ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡمَيۡمَنَةِ وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا هُمۡ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡمَشۡـَٔمَةِ عَلَيۡہِمۡ نَارٌ۬ مُّؤۡصَدَةُۢ

(11. But he has not attempted to pass on the path that is steep.) (12. And what will make you know the path that is steep) (13. Freeing a neck) (14. Or giving food in a day full of Masghabah,) (15. To an orphan near of kin.) (16. Or to a Miskin cleaving to dust.) (17. Then he became one of those who believed and recommended one another to patience, and recommended one another to compassion.) ذِى مَسۡغَبَةٍ۬of severe hunger.

Or a needy person in misery

ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَتَوَاصَوۡاْ بِٱلصَّبۡرِ وَتَوَاصَوۡاْ بِٱلۡمَرۡحَمَةِ
And then being among those who believed and advised one another to patience and advised one another to compassion.
ثُمَّThen
كَانَhe is
مِنَof
ٱلَّذِينَthose who
ءَامَنُواْbelieve
وَتَوَاصَوۡاْand enjoin each other
بِٱلصَّبۡرِto patience,
وَتَوَاصَوۡاْand enjoin each other
بِٱلۡمَرۡحَمَةِto compassion.

أُوْلَـٰٓٮِٕكَ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡمَيۡمَنَةِ
Those are the companions of the right.
أُوْلَـٰٓٮِٕكَThose
أَصۡحَـٰبُ(are the) companions
ٱلۡمَيۡمَنَةِ(of) the right hand.

وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا هُمۡ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡمَشۡـَٔمَةِ
But they who disbelieved in Our signs – those are the companions of the left.
وَٱلَّذِينَBut those who
كَفَرُواْdisbelieve
بِـَٔـايَـٰتِنَاin Our Verses,
هُمۡthey
أَصۡحَـٰبُ(are the) companions

عَلَيۡہِمۡ نَارٌ۬ مُّؤۡصَدَةُۢ
Over them will be fire closed in.
عَلَيۡہِمۡOver them,
نَارٌ۬(will be the) Fire
مُّؤۡصَدَةُۢclosed in.

(And shown him the two ways) "The good and the evil.'' Similar to this has been reported from `Ali, Ibn `Abbas, Mujahid, `Ikrimah, Abu Wa'il, Abu Salih, Muhammad bin Ka`b, Ad-Dahhak, and `Ata' Al-Khurasani among others. Similar to this Ayah is Allah's statement,

﴿ إِنَّا خَلَقۡنَا ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَ مِن نُّطۡفَةٍ أَمۡشَاجٍ۬ نَّبۡتَلِيهِ فَجَعَلۡنَـٰهُ سَمِيعَۢا بَصِيرًا إِنَّا هَدَيۡنَـٰهُ ٱلسَّبِيلَ إِمَّا شَاكِرً۬ا وَإِمَّا كَفُورًا

(Verily, We have created man from Nutfah Amshaj, in order to try him: so We made him hearer and seer. Verily, We showed him the way, whether he be grateful or ungrateful.) (76:2-3)

﴿ فَلَا ٱقۡتَحَمَ ٱلۡعَقَبَةَ وَمَآ أَدۡرَٮٰكَ مَا ٱلۡعَقَبَةُ فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ أَوۡ إِطۡعَـٰمٌ۬ فِى يَوۡمٍ۬ ذِى مَسۡغَبَةٍ۬ يَتِيمً۬ا ذَا مَقۡرَبَةٍ أَوۡ مِسۡكِينً۬ا ذَا مَتۡرَبَةٍ۬ ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَتَوَاصَوۡاْ بِٱلصَّبۡرِ وَتَوَاصَوۡاْ بِٱلۡمَرۡحَمَةِ أُوْلَـٰٓٮِٕكَ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡمَيۡمَنَةِ وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا هُمۡ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡمَشۡـَٔمَةِ عَلَيۡہِمۡ نَارٌ۬ مُّؤۡصَدَةُۢ

(11. But he has not attempted to pass on the path that is steep.) (12. And what will make you know the path that is steep) (13. Freeing a neck) (14. Or giving food in a day full of Masghabah,) (15. To an orphan near of kin.) (16. Or to a Miskin cleaving to dust.) (17. Then he became one of those who believed and recommended one another to patience, and recommended one another to compassion.) (18. They are those on the Right,) (19. But those who disbelieved in Our Ayat, they are those on the Left.) (20. Upon them Fire will Mu'sadah.)
