ٱلۡقَارِعَةُ
The Striking Calamity –
ٱلۡقَارِعَةُThe Striking Calamity!
Tafsir Ibn Kathir

Which was revealed in Makkah

﴿ بِسۡمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

﴿ ٱلۡقَارِعَةُ مَا ٱلۡقَارِعَةُ وَمَآ أَدۡرَٮٰكَ مَا ٱلۡقَارِعَةُ يَوۡمَ يَكُونُ ٱلنَّاسُ ڪَٱلۡفَرَاشِ ٱلۡمَبۡثُوثِ وَتَكُونُ ٱلۡجِبَالُ ڪَٱلۡعِهۡنِ ٱلۡمَنفُوشِ فَأَمَّا مَن ثَقُلَتۡ مَوَٲزِينُهُ ۥ فَهُوَ فِى عِيشَةٍ۬ رَّاضِيَةٍ۬ وَأَمَّا مَنۡ خَفَّتۡ مَوَٲزِينُهُ ۥ فَأُمُّهُ ۥ هَاوِيَةٌ۬ وَمَآ أَدۡرَٮٰكَ مَا هِيَهۡ نَارٌ حَامِيَةُۢ

(1. Al-Qari`ah.) (2. What is Al-Qari`ah) (3. And what will make you know what Al-Qari`ah is) (4. It is a Day whereon mankind will be like moths scattered about.) (5. And the mountains will be like wool, carded.) (6. Then as for him whose Balance will be heavy,) (7. He will live a pleasant life.) (8. But as for him whose Balance will be light,) (9. His mother will be Hawiyah.) (10. And what will make you know what it is) (11. A fire Hamiyah!)

مَا ٱلۡقَارِعَةُ
What is the Striking Calamity?

Which was revealed in Makkah

﴿ بِسۡمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

﴿ ٱلۡقَارِعَةُ مَا ٱلۡقَارِعَةُ وَمَآ أَدۡرَٮٰكَ مَا ٱلۡقَارِعَةُ يَوۡمَ يَكُونُ ٱلنَّاسُ ڪَٱلۡفَرَاشِ ٱلۡمَبۡثُوثِ وَتَكُونُ ٱلۡجِبَالُ ڪَٱلۡعِهۡنِ ٱلۡمَنفُوشِ فَأَمَّا مَن ثَقُلَتۡ مَوَٲزِينُهُ ۥ فَهُوَ فِى عِيشَةٍ۬ رَّاضِيَةٍ۬ وَأَمَّا مَنۡ خَفَّتۡ مَوَٲزِينُهُ ۥ فَأُمُّهُ ۥ هَاوِيَةٌ۬ وَمَآ أَدۡرَٮٰكَ مَا هِيَهۡ نَارٌ حَامِيَةُۢ

وَمَآ أَدۡرَٮٰكَ مَا ٱلۡقَارِعَةُ
And what can make you know what is the Striking Calamity?
وَمَآAnd what
أَدۡرَٮٰكَwill make you know
مَاwhat
ٱلۡقَارِعَةُ(is) the Striking Calamity?

يَوۡمَ يَكُونُ ٱلنَّاسُ ڪَٱلۡفَرَاشِ ٱلۡمَبۡثُوثِ
It is the Day when people will be like moths, dispersed,
يَوۡمَ(The) Day
يَكُونُwill be
ٱلنَّاسُthe mankind
ڪَٱلۡفَرَاشِlike moths,
ٱلۡمَبۡثُوثِscattered,

وَتَكُونُ ٱلۡجِبَالُ ڪَٱلۡعِهۡنِ ٱلۡمَنفُوشِ
And the mountains will be like wool, fluffed up.
وَتَكُونُAnd will be
ٱلۡجِبَالُthe mountains
ڪَٱلۡعِهۡنِlike wool,
ٱلۡمَنفُوشِfluffed up.

Which was revealed in Makkah

﴿ بِسۡمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

فَأَمَّا مَن ثَقُلَتۡ مَوَٲزِينُهُ ۥ
Then as for one whose scales are heavy [with good deeds],
فَأَمَّاThen as for
مَن(him) whose
ثَقُلَتۡare heavy
مَوَٲزِينُهُ ۥhis scales,

﴿ بِسۡمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

فَهُوَ فِى عِيشَةٍ۬ رَّاضِيَةٍ۬
He will be in a pleasant life.
فَهُوَThen he
فِى(will be) in
عِيشَةٍ۬a life,
رَّاضِيَةٍ۬pleasant.

Which was revealed in Makkah

﴿ بِسۡمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

وَأَمَّا مَنۡ خَفَّتۡ مَوَٲزِينُهُ ۥ
But as for one whose scales are light,
وَأَمَّاBut as for
مَنۡ(him) whose
خَفَّتۡare light
مَوَٲزِينُهُ ۥhis scales,

﴿ بِسۡمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

فَأُمُّهُ ۥ هَاوِيَةٌ۬
His refuge will be an abyss.
فَأُمُّهُ ۥHis abode
هَاوِيَةٌ۬(will be the) Pit.

وَمَآ أَدۡرَٮٰكَ مَا هِيَهۡ
And what can make you know what that is?
وَمَآAnd what
أَدۡرَٮٰكَwill make you know
مَاwhat
هِيَهۡit is?

نَارٌ حَامِيَةُۢ
It is a Fire, intensely hot.
نَارٌA Fire,
حَامِيَةُۢintensely hot.

﴿ بِسۡمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
